Table Meeting on Polio

A
meeting to discuss the polio eradication programme and future
initiatives was held at the Ministry of Health
& Family Welfare on 4 November 2008, and was
chaired by Dr A. Ramadoss, Union Health
Minister, Government of
India. The meeting with Mr Bill Gates and
members of the Bill & Melinda Gates
Foundation was attended by senior officers of
the Ministry, Planning Commission, UNICEF,
Rotary International, and
WHO. |
UN
Secretary-General administers oral polio
vaccine
The
United Nations Secretary-General, Mr Ban Ki-moon, administered oral
polio vaccine to children in New Delhi on
October 31, underlining global UN commitment to
child health.
Accompanied
by Mrs Ban, the Secretary General took time off at
the end of his busy two-day visit for polio
immunization organized in collaboration with the
Delhi
health authorities.
Dr S.
J. Habayeb, WHO Representative to
India,
and Dr Hamid Jafari, Project Manager,
WHO-National Polio Surveillance Project,
accompanied the Secretary-General and Mrs Ban, who
took turns to administer polio vaccine drops to
the children. Mr Ban also put an ink mark on the
fingers of the children, in accordance with the
procedure followed by the vaccinators during polio
campaigns.
Floods in Bihar
A breach
of the eastern embankment of the Kosi river in the Indo-Nepal border,
following heavy monsoon rains in August, has led
to extensive floods in
Bihar. The river has
changed its course and shifted 120 kms eastwards inundating many
district.
About 4.8 million people in nearly
2600 villages are affected by the floods. The
worst hit districts are Supaul, Madehpura, Katihar, Saharsa and Araria. More>…
Sasakawa Calls for a
Focus on Social Rehabilitation of Leprosy
Patients
“The medical
and social rehabilitation are like two wheels of a
bicycle and only together they can confront
leprosy in a true sense. With Multi Drug Therapy
curing a large number of people, it is time now to
enhance the focus on social rehabilitation to rid
them of the stigma attached to leprosy.”
These were the message that Mr Yohei Sasakawa, WHO Goodwill
Ambassador for Elimination of Leprosy, gave when
he visited Delhi,
Varanasi

No Tobacco Day (31st May
2008)
Theme : “Tobacco Free Youth”
Tobacco is the leading preventable
cause of death in the world. Globally, most people
start smoking before the age of 18, and almost a
quarter of these individuals begin using tobacco
before the age of 10. The younger children are
when they first try smoking, the more likely they
are to become regular tobacco users and the less
