Dr A. Gunasekar joined the WHO in
January 2008 as Temporary National Professional (Malaria and Vector Borne
Diseases) after taking premature release from the Armed Forces. His main responsibility is to assist in
promoting policies and strategies for malaria and other vector borne
diseases, as advocated by WHO and to provide technical and operational
support in these areas.
He served in the Armed Forces for
30 years as a public health professional including a teaching assignment at
AFMC, Pune and as Director (Medical Research) at the office of the Director General
Armed Forces Medical Services, New
Delhi.
Dr Gunasekar graduated in
Medicine from Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and
Research (JIPMER), Pondicherry
in 1975 and subsequently did his post graduation in Community Medicine in 1986
from the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune. He has also done his Diploma in Industrial
Health from AFMC, Pune in 1998.
