NICD
has eight field stations operating in different regions of India carrying out
disease-specific activities, manpower development in the field of
epidemiology and related disciplines and providing field exposure to the
trainees. These are located in the states of Rajasthan, Bihar, Andhra
Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Uttar

state-of-the-art Computer Laboratory fully equipped with desktops and latest
software, LCD projectors and other facilities available exclusive for use by
the trainees

vast experience in outbreak investigations at National and International
level operational research and health manpower development
The
institute has a well-stocked library with over 34,300 titles and regularly
subscribing to 111 foreign and 37 national journals. The library also
receives complimentary journals from WHO and other organizations

About Regional
Training Programme on Prevention and Control of Communicable Diseases
NICD
is designated as a WHO Collaborating Centre for Epidemiology and Training
since 1996. Regional Training Programme on Prevention and Control of
Communicable Diseases is conducted at NICD every year since 1999

participants from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and
India have attended the previous courses
It
is a tailor-made training programme for
participants from countries of South East Asia Region to strengthen their
epidemiological skills
The
course is designed to augment the capacity to understand disease dynamics in
community and intervention for its prevention and control
Maximum
intake for the course is restricted to 15 participants

Objectives
The objective of the course is to strengthen the technical
capabilities and skills of paramedical personnel by providing practical
training in prevention and control of communicable diseases and application
of computer for surveillance purposes.
At the end of the training programme,
the participants are expected to:
Carryout
disease surveillance activities in their work place
Interpret
the information generated from the community and plan the control measures at
their level
Recognize
early warning signals of impending outbreaks from community and initiate
appropriate measures for prevention and control
Assist
the Medical Officers in carrying out outbreak investigation, control of
epidemic prone and endemic diseases
Carryout
field surveys and conduct interviews
Collect
appropriate laboratory specimens, store and transport the samples to
laboratory
Use
computer in data management, graphics and presentation
Develop
communication and leadership skills

and methods for prevention and control of diseases of public health

Epidemiology
of selected epidemic-prone communicable diseases, non-communicable diseases
and their prevention and control
Biostatistics:
analysis, presentation and interpretation of data

of computers in data analysis and presentation

of laboratory in field epidemiology

field based studies, carry out field-exercise and report writing

Includes faculty of NICD, and senior officers from major

Eligibility criteria for admission to the course:
In-service
paramedical personnel
Five
year in-service experience of which last 2 years should be in public health
Preferable
age less than 45 years
Ability
to communicate in English language
Sponsored
by the respective governments/organizations
Expenditure
towards travel, boarding and lodging to be borne by the participants or the
sponsoring authority
Methodology and
Description
The
course is of four weeks duration
3
weeks will be spent on classroom sessions including group discussions,
modular exercises, group presentations, panel discussions,
'hands-on-training' in laboratory procedures and computer usage including Epi-Info software
1
week for field visit including protocol presentation, pilot survey, data
collection, compilation, analysis, report writing and presentation
The
course fee per participant is US$600 which includes tuition fee of US$250,
and field visits & institutional charges of US$350 per participants
Boarding Facility
A modest hostel with boarding and lodging facilities at
nominal rates is available to the participants within the NICD campus.
