Training Program
in Research Ethics in the Americas

The training program is being conducted under a grant
from the Fogarty International Center of the National Institutes of Health in
the United States
OPEN TO: Physicians, biomedical scientists, bioethicists, lawyers, philosophers, social scientists,
and other scholars
Completed applications must be submitted by November
15, 2004
QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants
must be bilingual in English and Spanish, and reside in any country in
Central or South America.
They
must hold a medical degree (MD), a law degree (JD), a Ph.D., or a Master's
degree with substantial teaching, research, or clinical experience.
Candidates
must be employed at an institution to which they will return at the
conclusion of the fellowship year.
They
must provide evidence of institutional support to enable them to implement
the results of their training experience.
Individuals
working or teaching in public institutions are especially encouraged to
apply.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Likelihood
of making a substantial impact in their institution/community country after
the training year
Educational
background and degrees
Relevant
experience in research involving human subjects or research ethics
Past
accomplishments, including publications and projects established or
supervised
THE TRAINING
PROGRAM
Trainees
will spend seven months in the program, which will take place in Buenos
Aires, Argentina.
The
host institution is FLACSO, where trainees will have an office equipped with
a computer and printer.
Trainees
are expected to arrive in Buenos Aires on April 15, 2005 and will return home
in mid-November 2005.
Program activities
include:
attendance
at research ethics committees in several hospitals
participation
in bioethics seminars taught by Drs. Macklin and Luna, and other
international faculty
enrollment
in other courses relevant to the trainee's discipline,
completion
of a mentored research project
preparation of a detailed plan for implementing activities
in research ethics at the trainee's home institution.
STIPENDS
Trainees will receive a stipend that is expected to cover
their living expenses in Buenos Aires. The cost of economy class
airfare will be provided for all travel in connection with the training
program.
