Guidelines for Administration of

Emergency Contraceptive Pills for Medical Officers

Preface

The Department of Family Welfare, Government of India has decided to introduce Emergency Contraceptive Pills in the national reproductive and child health programme. The Emergency Contraceptive Pills help to prevent an unwanted pregnancy from an unprotected sexual intercourse if taken with in the prescribed time period. An unwanted pregnancy, often leads to unsafe abortions and consequent maternal deaths, Thus the introduction of the Emergency Contraceptive Pills is another step towards achieving the National Population Policy goals of decreased maternal mortality and reduced fertility.

The Department fully recognises the role of the Emergency Contraceptive Pills as an 'emergency' measure to prevent a pregnancy and intends to use the opportunity to help the clients who seek emergency contraception in adopting a regular contraceptive. The role of quality of care in adoption of a regular contraceptive and its continuation is well recognised. The Guidelines are to help medical officers to provide Quality services to clients of Emergency Contraceptive Pills.
