South Asia Breast feeding Partners Forum IV , 10th – 13 Dec 2007, Habitat, New Delhi

The South Asia Breastfeeding Partners Forum is an ongoing effort in South Asia to protect, promote and support breastfeeding. Each year the Forum is held in a different country in the region to strengthen partnerships between the various breastfeeding partners. Earlier fora have been held in Dhaka, Katmandu and Kabul. Forum IV was organized in New Delhi as a part of this ongoing work in South Asia. The Forum also identifies a specific theme related to breastfeeding. The theme for this forum being Save Babies: Support Women to Breastfeed.

South Asia Breastfeeding Partners Forum IV was jointly hosted by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), Breastfeeding Promotion Network of India (BPNI) and International Baby Food Action Network (IBFAN-Asia). It was supported by WHO -India, Planning Commission of India, UNICEF- ROSA, SIDA (Swedish International Development Agency), Netherlands Ministry of Cooperation and Development (DGIS), and World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action. 

It was attended by over 110 participants representing governments, national and international NGOs, civil society organizations, professional organizations, and media from the South Asian countries of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

The objectives of the forum were as given below:

*      To review the coverage of interventions of MDG-1 (eradication of extreme poverty and hunger) and MDG-4 (reduction in child mortality) in South Asia with regard to infant nutrition inputs at policy and programme level.

*      To initiate a periodic review process of MDG-4 and SDG-10 every 2 years.

*      To share and discuss the progress made in past 2 years on initiatives for supporting women enhancing early and exclusive breastfeeding in any of the ten areas defined by the WBTi assessment.

*     To share specific experiences of training and capacity building on infant and young child feeding counseling skills.

*      To discuss how to mainstream infant and young child feeding counseling in child health / development programs.

*     To follow up on the 'Kabul Declaration on Infant and Young Child Feeding'.

*     To assist SAARC countries translate their commitment to SDG 10 to effective action.
