The 28th
Annual Conference of Indian Society of Anesthesiologists, U.P Chapter was
held on the 28th-29th Oct., 2006 at the Holiday Inn, Agra. It was hosted by
Indian Society of Anesthesiologists, Agra
branch & Dept. of Anesthesiology, S.N
Medical College,
Agra and
supported by Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India
& WHO-India Country Office. The participants included faculty and post-graduate
students from the Department of Anesthesiology from various Medical College’s,
resource persons from MOHFW, GOI and WHO-India.
The conference
covered a host of topics ranging from Anesthetic Implications for Elderly
Patients, Errors in Anesthetic Practice, Control of Infection in ICU,
Management of Cerebral Malaria, Anesthesia in Non-operating room to
Anesthesia for Laparoscopic Surgery with special emphasis on ‘Life Saving Anesthetic Skills for
Emergency Obstetric Care’. A special session pertaining to the given topic
was organized with the intention of orienting the participants to new
policies and programs under Reproductive and Child Health Program and to
disseminate the guidelines developed for the same. The background for this, being that all
pregnant women are at risk of obstetric complications during labor and
delivery. In India,
an estimated 100,000 women die due to causes related to pregnancy. The main
causes of maternal mortality being hemorrhage, unsafe abortions, eclampsia, sepsis and obstructed labor. The majority of
these causes are amenable to prevention through the provision of good quality
ante-natal, natal and post natal care, safe institutional deliveries, timely
referrals and provision of emergency obstetric care; of which anesthesia is
an important element.

of Emergency Obstetric Anesthesia in Rural Set-up
Experiences
in setting up of Emergency Obstetric Anesthesia Services in Rural Areas
The conference
also included a quiz for the post-graduates as well as a competitive paper
and poster presentation. The conference concluded with a workshop on
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.
