Pre service IMNCI in 4 medical colleges of India
A pilot project was undertaken at the All India
Institute of Medical Colleges (AIIMS) supported by the World Health
Organization to introduce IMNCI strategy in undergraduate teaching in four
medical schools in India
in 2002.
The objectives of the project were to adapt the students’ handbook on
IMCI for medical undergraduates and to introduce IMNCI strategy in
undergraduate teaching in four medical colleges. A core group was identified
under the leadership of Professor MK Bhan at AIIMS
in initiating and planning the activities of the project.
The colleges identified were Lok Manya Tilak Medical College
(LMTMC), Mumbai, MS Ramaih Medical College (MSRMC) Bangalore, Christian Medical College (CMC) Ludhiana, and Gandhi Medical College (GMC) Bhopal (representing
four broad regions of the country) and where the heads of the department had
taken the 11 day generic IMCI training. The faculty (two members including
the Head of Department from each college) of the four medical colleges were asked to develop a “plan of action”
with a “time line” for introducing IMNCI into their academic programme at a two day meeting at AIIMS in February 2002.
This was followed by the adaptation of the WHO IMCI students hand and the WHO
Generic book on “Management of Severe
infections and Severe Malnutrition in small hospitals” for pre-service
training in October 2002 by the core IMNCI training group identified from All
India Institute of Medical Sciences and the four medical colleges. The
learning material was printed and provided to each college for starting the programme.
