Suprabha Ganga Yatra
(18 January, 2006 to 05 May, 2006) :
An Event for Women’s Health Awareness
The Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecological
Societies of India (FOGSI) supported by the Indian Medical Association (IMA)
and Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan
(NYKS) organized a 2,400 km walkathon along the length of the river Ganges in a bid to raise awareness to issues pertaining
to women’s health.
The yatra spanning a
total of 108 days, covering 25,000 women, meeting 200,000 people and showing
educational documentaries to 500 people on a daily basis organized a total of
81 health camps-“Mahila Swasthya
Mela’s” where awareness sessions were conducted.
The awareness sessions focused on the following:
Care during pregnancy,
Safe delivery & safe abortions,
STI/RTI including HIV/AIDS,
Nutrition
Access to health care.
All these issues were looked at in the light of the
existing gender disparities in access to education and information.
