Suprabha Ganga Yatra (18 January, 2006 to 05 May, 2006) : An Event for Women’s Health Awareness

The Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecological Societies of India (FOGSI) supported by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) organized a 2,400 km walkathon along the length of the river Ganges in a bid to raise awareness to issues pertaining to women’s health.

The yatra spanning a total of 108 days, covering 25,000 women, meeting 200,000 people and showing educational documentaries to 500 people on a daily basis organized a total of 81 health camps-“Mahila Swasthya Mela’s” where awareness sessions were conducted.

The awareness sessions focused on the following:

*     Care during pregnancy,

*     Safe delivery & safe abortions,

*     STI/RTI including HIV/AIDS,

*     Nutrition

*     Access to health care.

All these issues were looked at in the light of the existing gender disparities in access to education and information.
