National Workshop on Adolescent Reproductive and Sexual Health

A National Workshop on Adolescent Reproductive and Sexual Health (ARSH) was organized at the National Institute of Health and Family Welfare in New Delhi on 23-24 July 2009. Representatives from more than 30 states participated in the workshop organised by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare with support of WHO.

The objectives of the workshop were to review the progress in implementation of ARSH strategy across the states; explore opportunities for convergence at the policy and programme levels; and plan the way forward for scaling up implementation of ARSH as an important component of RCH-II.

Mr A M Prasad, Joint Secretary, MOHFW, in his keynote address highlighted that adolescence is a sensitive and important phase in an individual's life and a multidisciplinary approach is needed to both understand and solve adolescent’s problems. The adolescents constitute nearly 22 per cent of India's population.

During the two-day deliberations officials from the states, Ministry of Women and Child Development, NCERT, and the Ministry of Human Resource Development shared their success models and discussed issues related to effective implementation of ARSH.

The document “Reproductive and Sexual Health of Young People in India – Secondary Analysis of data from National Family Health Surveys of India” was released during the national workshop. The document provides national and state level age-disaggregated data that will assist in focused planning and monitoring.
