International Conclave on
Traditional Medicine
The Department of Ayush,
MOHFW, GOI in collaboration with National Institute of Science Communication
and Information Resources (CSIR) organized The International Conclave on
Traditional Medicine on the 16-17 November, 2006 at the National Agriculture
Science Complex (ICAR). It was supported by WHO-India Country Office, World
Intellectuals Property Organization (WIPO) and Asian and Pacific Centre for
Transfer of Technology (APCTT). The participants were from the member
countries of the following: South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation
(SAARC), India, Bangladesh and South Africa (IBSA), Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMTEC) and
Asia- Pacific Traditional Medicine and Herbal Technology Network (APTMNET)
countries.
The dignitaries present at the
inaugural session were Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss, Hon’ble Minister,
Health & FW, Ms. Anita Das, Secretary, Department of Ayush,
Sh. Shiv Basant, Joint Secretary, Department of Ayush, Dr. Paramita Sudharto, Public Health
Administrator, WHO-India Country Office, Mr. V.K Gupta, Director, NISCAIR and
Dr. Nityanand
from CDRI, Lucknow.
The
workshop was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Minister of
Health & FW, Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss
and addressed to by the dignitaries on the dais.
The two day conclave was organized
with the intent of deliberating the following issues:
Type of evidence that is required to convince
regulators about the quality, safety and efficacy of traditional medicinal
products as distinct from new chemical entities produced under controlled
laboratory conditions.
International cooperation in the field of
harmonization of herbal pharmacopoeia, sharing of information regarding
standardization and quality control parameters.
Regulation of teaching and practice of TM
systems across frontiers
Cooperation between countries and
international agencies like WHO, WIPO, APCTT for
resolving issues relating to protection of Traditional Medicinal knowledge,
access and benefit sharing with communities/ countries who are holders of TM
knowledge.
A presentation was made on behalf of
WHO-India “WHO Traditional Medicine Strategy and Guidelines.” The
presentation focused on the use of traditional medicine in different
countries, types of health systems, integration of traditional medicine,
challenges and WHO strategic directions.
