The Pravara
Institute of Medical Sciences is organizing the 32nd Annual
National Conference of the Indian Association of Preventive and Social
Medicine (IAPSM) on the Millennium Development Goals for Health Challenges
and Approaches in the context of Rural India from 17 to 19 February
2005. The IAPSM is a registered body having more than 2,000 life
members from all medical colleges and public health experts in India.
All countries have started
the new millennium with an ambitious development agenda planned in the
Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The MDGs assume strategic importance for governments and
development agencies as they provide a focus and a way for the global
development agenda. The MDGs adopted by the
United Nations in 2000, though not UN goals,
represent commitments by governments worldwide to do more to reduce poverty
and hunger and to tackle ill-health, gender inequality, lack of education,
lack of access to clean water and environmental degradation and also
commitments to reduce debt, increase technology transfers and build
development partnerships. Among all the goals, health assumes the
central point in the development agenda.
Considering the urgent need
for multisectoral interventions and actions by
different stakeholders, a national level meeting is being organized to
discuss and develop an agenda for action by public health professionals to
achieve MDGs.
