The centre was approved for redesignation by the RDC vide minutes of the meeting dated 10 October 2006.

Origin of the proposal, technical programme which is sponsoring, reasons for proposed designation

The Centre provides training facilities for WHO fellows. The Director of this Institute participate in several WHO HQ meetings including WHO Meeting on National Cancer Control programme

Steps that have led to this proposal, eg site-visits by WHO staff, previous participation of the institution, joint development of a workplan, etc.

Visit of Technical Unit/SEARO and SRP to Mumbai. 

Comments & Composition of the Institute

Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai was established in 1941 to provide therapeutic and after care services in cancer in India. In 1966 Tata Memorial Centre, constituting of Tata memorial Hospital and CancerResearch Institute was established. 

Statutory functions of the institution ; formal links with other institutions

The Institute is a phylanthropic organization and hence has no stautory functions.

Terms of Reference

· To develop guidelines on screening and early detection for Cervix, Breast, and Tobacco Related Cancers.

· To develop model screening and early detection programmes for Cervix, Breast, and Tobacco Related Cancers.

· To conduct research with respect to descriptive epidemiology and interventional studies for the primary prevention and early detection of Cervix, Breast, and Tobacco Related Cancers.

· To establish and conduct training programmes for medical and para-medical personnel for education, prevention, screening and early detection of Cervix, Breast, and Tobacco Related Cancers.

· To develop educational resources for cancer control programmes including mass-media resources.

· To establish and develop collaborative programmes with other WHO collaborating centres with special emphasis on capacity building and epidemiologic research.
