Terms of Reference

1. To develop and carry out activities for the prevention of blindness with special emphasis on the reduction of blindness and vision impairment due to Vision 2020 priority conditions in India - cataract, refractive errors, low vision, diabetic retinopathy and corneal diseases;

2. To design and offer training programmes to eye care personnel at different professional levels, especially from the developing countries, again with a special focus on Vision 2020 priority ocular conditions and management of eye care programmes;

3. To conduct applied field research on the epidemiology, management and operational aspects of avoidable blindness and apply the findings in the service delivery and other programmes;

4. To foster a multi-disciplinary approach to the promotion of eye health and to the delivery of eye care to all;

5. To participate in the development, collection, elaboration and distribution of pertinent information and serve as a resource centre towards the achievement of Vision 2020 goals;

6. To engage in the development of high quality low cost ophthalmic equipments and supplies such as ophthalmoscopes, lasers, intra ocular lens, sutures, etc. so as to reduce the cost of eye care; and
