The centre has been redesignated vide RD's letter no. N8/72/1 dated 17 October, 2005. 

 

 

Introduction

 

Origin of the proposal, technical programme which is sponsoring, reasons for proposed designation

Cardiothoracic Sciences Center which is proposed as WHo CC is a super speciality center functioning autonomously in AIIMS. 

Steps that have led to this proposal, eg site-visits by WHO staff, previous participation of the institution, joint development of a workplan, etc.

Prof. Reddy the proposed responsible person for this CC has a long history of outstanding contribution to development and implementation of WHo programme in the field of prevention and control of cardiovascular diseases. Together with his team, he has initiated and implemented WHO Cardiovascular Health Initiative in Developing countires

All India Institute of Medical Sciences was established in 1956 by an Act of Parliament. it is now recognized as premier medical institution in India. It has comprehensive facilities for teaching, research and patient care.

As a part of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, it is the apex institution in the country for medical research, clinical services, training and coordination.

Workplan

 

Terms of Reference

 To design, implement and evaluate community based demonstration projects for cardiovascular risk reduction in (a) population groups and (b) high risk individuals, incorporating multi-sectoral interventions for health promotion, risk detection, risk stratification and risk modification.

 To design, implement and evaluate (through cluster randomized trials and demonstration projects) interventions for promoting healthy behaviours among youth (students of schools and colleges) - with emphasis on tobacco avoidance and cessation, increase in physical activity and healthy dietary practices.

 To increase the capacity of different categories of health professionals including non-physician health care providers (nurses, multipurpose health workers, nutritionists etc) in providing community based services for health promotion and prevention of CVD.

 To increase the capacity of organized civil society groups (NGOs, Resident Welfare Associations, Women's Groups, Youth Groups, Religious groups etc.) and the media in conducting community based programmes and disseminating key messages for health promotion and prevention of cardiovascular diseases.

 To assist the Government of India and WHO in the development, implementation and evaluation of policies and programmes related to: (a) tobacco control and (b) diet and physical activity

 To establish an Indian network for : a) training in epidemiology and prevention of CVD; b) initiating and establishing country-wide data collection

 To support Regional WHO activities within the framework of the Global Programme for Prevention & Control of CVD
