The SEARO RDC cleared the proposal on 10 March, 2003. After consultation with GOI RD/SEARO designated the Centre on 15.12.2003 for four years. 

 

 

Introduction

 

Origin of the proposal, technical programme which is sponsoring, reasons for proposed designation

Faculty from the NIMHANS has been associated with the WHO/HQs, Geneva, SEARO and other collaborating centres in a number of ways. Contributions have been made to the development of burden and impact of injuries in South-East Asia, strategies for injury prevention and control in South-East Asia, injury surveillance guidelines, injury classification methods, global report on violences and health, monography on suicide prevention and control in South-East Asia, strategies for evaluating road safety and preventions and advocacy programmes both within India and in South-East Asia. 

Steps that have led to this proposal, eg site-visits by WHO staff, previous participation of the institution, joint development of a workplan, etc.

Several projects in the area of injury prevention and control have been completed through APWs with WHO. Institute faculty has participated in a number of WHO expert committee meetings, intercountryowrkships and review meetings. Currently NIMHANS is leading a major research project on resource and infrastructure assessment for injury prevention and control in South-East Asia Region with financial and technical support from WHO. It is also planned to start training programmes for health and related professionals in the Region from 2003. 

Comments & Composition of the Institute

WHO has been working closely with Department of Epidemiology, NIMHANS based in Bangalore, in regard to activities related to injury prevention and safety promotion.

The activities of this Centre are spread over provision of patient care, manpower development, research, policy formulation and development, programme implementation and large-scale national and international activities.
