Genetic
unit as a part of the Department of Pediatrics, started in 1966 when AIIMS
decided to develop this subspeciality as a part
of the Department of pediatrics. Over the years the Genetic unit has
developed into one of the premier human genetics units in the
country.

proposal, eg site-visits by WHO staff, previous
participation of the institution, joint development of a workplan, etc.

November 1996.

Comments & Composition of
the Institute
|
The
apex body that governs AIIMS is the Institute Body and consists of 17
members. The Governing Body of the Institute is constituted by the
Institute from among its members and has 12 members. The Institute is
assisted by its own Academic Committee and Finance Committee and Selection
Committee, consisting of eminent medical professionals and
parliamentarians, in its governing politics. The Institute has 45
departments with over 5000 professional staff.

An act
of Parliament in 1956 established the AIIMS as an autonomous institution of
national importance and defined its objectives and functions. The Institute
grants its own medical degrees and other academic distinctions which are recognised medical qualifications for the purpose of
the Indian Medical Council Act.The Genetic Unit
has collaboration with the National Institute of Deafness and other
Communication Disorders (NIDC), national Institutes of Health, maryland, Bethesda, USA and International Cystic
Fibrosis Foundation to establish cytic fibrosis
services at New Delhi.

1. To develop
training curriculum and material for upgrading skills of medical and allied
health professionals.
