Introduction

 

Origin of the proposal, technical programme which is sponsoring, reasons for proposed designation

WHO SEARO has a decade's working relationship with the Christian Medical College, Vellore. Workshops based on Community Based Education have been organized at CMC. 

Steps that have led to this proposal, eg site-visits by WHO staff, previous participation of the institution, joint development of a workplan, etc.

The recent collaborative effort was when the Christian Medical College collaborated with WHO, SEARO, in the conduct of the Regional Consultation on Development of Accreditation guidelines for educational/training institutions and Programmes in Public Health, held in Chennai, India from 30 January to 1 February 2002. The Institute provided full institutional expertise and resource personnel which led to a good outcome.

The Institution is a Christian Missionary institution successfully operating in the South India, with well qualified professional staff.

The institution is closely associated with the activities of ICMR, NIHFW, FPA of India, Directorate of Science and Technology, Indian Council of Social Research as well as with various professional organization such as Community Medicine, Paediatric associations, Surgeons Association, etc.

Terms of Reference


· To assist and provide training/s as mentioned in the Four Year Work Plan (attached):
· To organize and conduct training activities in managerial development for local and international health personnel from member countries of WHO;
· To act as resource centre for WHO in the area of Community Based Health professions Education programmes;
· To conduct research on various health manpower development projects e.g. (1) Community oriented health programmes; (2) Teaching of Medical Ethics; (3) Health system reform movements, and (4) Private-Public partnerships in education of health professions, etc.
· To develop modules on health programmes as required by WHO;
· To participate in Towards Unity for Health (TUHF) initiatives being carried out by WHO/HQ.
