GSC approved the designation on 22 January 2003. SEARO designated the Centre vide letter No. N2/72/1 dated 21 May 2003 for four years. 

 

 

Introduction

 

Origin of the proposal, technical programme which is sponsoring, reasons for proposed designation

Since 1998 the College of Nursing, CMC Vellore has trained 46 nurses from India on 3 month short-term training on Emergency and Trauma Nursing under WHO collaborative programme with India. In the biennia 1996-97 and 1998-99, it trained 22 nurses from the Region on 3-month short-term training on community health nursing under ICP project. In addition, it provdes other advanced training programmes or study visits, on ad hoc basis for nurses in the Region under various country projects. 

Steps that have led to this proposal, eg site-visits by WHO staff, previous participation of the institution, joint development of a workplan, etc.

The College of Nursing has been successfully collaborated with the WHO/SEARO in the past few biennia in providing advanced training for nurses from India s well as from other SEAR countries. 

Comments & Composition of the Institute

The College of Nursing has been in operation as an integral part of the CMC, Vellore for almost a hundred years. The nursing training programme was started at CMC in 1904 and was formalized in 1907. Gradually, a number of higher training, graduate and postgraduate courses were implemented. 

Statutory functions of the institution ; formal links with other institutions

A number of higher training courses, graduate, and postgraduate courses have been implemented and the Collge offers numerous nursing programs at various levels i.e., diploma, bachelor, master and advanced specialities programmes. The Collge has been recognized by the University to conduct the PhD programme in Nursing since 1994.

1) Serve as a resource center for research and development in nursing and midwifery for national (southern regions of India), regional and international communities.

2) Serve as resource center for training nurse teachers, clinicians, researchers and managers on advanced clinical/functional specialties at national (southern regions of India) and regional levels (as requested).

3) Promote and support the development and implementation of innovations in nursing and midwifery practice/education to improve quality of care and education.

4) Promote and support the introduction of innovations in nursing/ midwifery practice and education in formal educational programme for nursing and midwifery at basic and post basic levels.

5) Promote and support the collaboration of nursing and midwifery education and service sectors to improve quality of nursing and midwifery care and education.

6) Collect and disseminate information related to advancements in nursing/midwifery practice and education at the national (southern regions of India), regional and international levels.
