Origin of the proposal, technical programme which is sponsoring, reasons for proposed designation

The Institute continues to impart training in tuberculosis control for national and international participants on WHO sponsorship. 

Steps that have led to this proposal, eg site-visits by WHO staff, previous participation of the institution, joint development of a workplan, etc.

Close association with WHO training and visit of the WHO RA to the Centre. 

Comments & Composition of the Institute

NTI imparts field training to international participants through Prague course for WHo epidemiologists, UINICEF pediatricians and Public Health Nurses. This institute was set up in 1959. Since then, many international stalwarts in the field of tuberculosis have been working in the NTI upto 1977 and has contributed a great deal either as a full time or part time WHo Consultants.

This Institute is under the administrative control of the Dte General of Health Services, Govt of India, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, New Delhi.

It is the Training for WHO epidemiologists, UNICEF Pediatricians and Public Health Nurses. There was a large representation of WHO trainees in NTI's regular training courses of 13 weeks duration.

Terms of Reference

1. To conduct research on TB epidemiology and control strategies relevant to NTP delivery including surveillance;

2. to provide advice on methodology for TB data collection and trend analysis, with special reference to morbidity, mortality and programme performance;

3. to test, introduce and advise on innovative ways for implementing broad scope strategies and interventions, in line with evolving priorities such as TB-HIV, MDR-TB, PPM-DOTS and community involvement;

4. to provide technical assistance on operational aspects of TB control, when requested by WHO or Member countries;

5. to support human resources development and capacity through integrating specific skills development activities relevant to TB control in pre-service and in-service training curricula;

6. to assist in developing, testing and providing relevant materials to support TB related advocacy, communication and social mobilization (ACS) activities.
