Comments & Composition of the Institute

The Tuberculosis Research Centre (TRC), formerly known as Tuberculosis Chemotherapy Centre is a permanent research institute of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. It was established in 1955, jointly by the ICMR, World Health Organization, Government of Tamil Nadu, and USPHS to determine the feasibility, efficacy and safety of domiciliary chemotherapy for sputum positive pulmonary tuberculosis patients.

Terms of Reference

1. To conduct studies on the efficacy and feasibility of TB case management including for MDR-TB and HIV related TB in order to determine the effectiveness of current recommendations for diagnostic and treatment policies of national TB control programmes; and to determine the efficacy of treatment of latent TB infection in HIV-TB;

2. to conduct operational and basic research, aimed at providing the evidence base for best practices, measuring the epidemiological impact of the control strategies and developing new diagnostic tools; the research agenda should be determined by the needs for improving the TB programme, as part of overarching health systems development;

3. to develop and test training materials/modules addressing training needs for national TB programmes, including TB-HIV and laboratory.

4. to avail the most appropriate laboratory services, as part of the Institute's role as a national and supranational mycobacteriology reference laboratory, to support building laboratory capacity in Member countries, including monitoring of drug resistance, undertaking identification tests for classifying mycobacteria, and providing technical support to Member countries, when requested.
