institute is primarily devoted to research and teaching in the field of
communicable diseases. Advancement and dissemination of knowledge relating
to the epidemiology and control of communicable diseases are important
objectives of the Institute. it also guides the
State health organizations in their activities, especially in communicable
disease control.

1. To
function as a Referral Centre for Rabies through
a). provide laboratory facitities
for the diagnosis of rabies in animal and human post mortem specimesn and ante mortem specimens in hydraphobia cases.
b). Assessment of anti-rabies antibodies in humans and animals vaccinated
with different vaccines (assessment of vacine
efficacy)
2. To train personnel in various laboratory techniques for the diagnosis of
rabies
3. To train nationals from countries of the Region in rabies epidemiology.
4. To compile epidemiological data on rabies
5. To undertake operational research on effective strategies for rabies
control.
