Introduction

 

Origin of the proposal, technical programme which is sponsoring, reasons for proposed designation

NIMHANS is a well renowned institute of excellence in India with contribution to research, training and care in several disciplines. The Department of Neurovirology has done commendable work for several years on diagnosis and research on diseases like Rabies, Japanese encephalitis, enterviruses, measles, Herpes and HiV

Steps that have led to this proposal, eg site-visits by WHO staff, previous participation of the institution, joint development of a workplan, etc.

The Department of Neurovirology has done exclusive work for several years on diagnosis and research on diseases caused by neurotropic viruses such as Rabies, Japanese encephalitis, Enterviruses, Measles, Herpes and HIV. The department has the required physical and laboratory infrastructure, equipment, facilities and adequate manpower. It also has a photography and coumentation centre and advanced computer facilities. 

Comments & Composition of the Institute

NIMHANS is a well recognised multi-disciplinary institute in the area of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences. The Institute which was established in 1974, is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Health, Government of India. It has the status of a deemed university since 1994. 

Statutory functions of the institution ; formal links with other institutions

The Institute provides preventive and curative care and facilities in all aspects of Mental Health encompassing Neuro-medicine, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry. It also conducts and coordinates basic and applied research in the field of Neurosciences, with focus on mental health and neurological diseases. In addition, it is recognised as a Training Centre in the field of Neurosciences and offers formal degrees and diploma in several specialities related to Mental Health and Neurosciences.

The Centre has collaboration and linkages with other National Institutes like NICD, and Pasteur Institute Coonoor and with Rabies Research laboratories in five other countries.

1. To provide technical support to rabies diagnosis to India and upon request to other countries
2. To assess the safety and feasibility in the Indian context of current and new regimens for rabies post exposure treatment.
3. To develop new tools for rabies diagnosis and post exposure treatment

5. To support rabies surveillance in India
