Visit of Special Envoy to UN Secretary General for

Tsunami Recovery

Mr William J. Clinton, Special Envoy to UN Secretary General for Tsunami Recovery, visited India from 24 – 27 May 2005.  The visit focused on two major topics: HIV/AIDS; and Tsunami rehabilitation activities.

 

The Special Envoy flew to Nagapattinam by helicopter on 27 May 2005 and was accompanied by Dr S. J. Habayeb, WHO Representative to India; Dr (Ms) Maxine Olson, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative; and Mr Cecilio Adorna, UNICEF Representative.  The trip included a visit to the Collectorate for a briefing by the District Magistrate, a photo exhibition,  interaction with NGOs and tsunami survivors, income-generating activities, children’s nurseries, ITI Shelter sites, where he visited a psycho-social support unit supported by WHO and ICDS Cell supported by UNICEF.

 

Mr Clinton expressed his satisfaction with the Government efforts and the UN support and called for acceleration of the rehabilitation efforts.
