Dr S.J. Habayeb, WHO
Representative to India,
visited Tsunami-affected areas in Tamil Nadu on 21-22 February 2005 with
State Government officials, and was accompanied by Dr. Paul Francis, Mr. A.K.
Sengupta and Dr. R.K. Pal from WHO India Country Office. He discussed with
the State officials ongoing and future technical assistance including
coordination, information sharing, technical guidelines for Disaster
Management and Preparedness, Disease Surveillance, Psychosocial Support,
Water Quality and Environmental Sanitation, Strengthening Maternal Care, New
Born Care, Child and Adolescent Health, Measles and Polio Immunization,
HIV/AIDS, Health Systems Development, and the WHO Coordination Cell in
Chennai.
The Symposium was organised
by Tamil Nadu Department of Health & Family Welfare in collaboration with
WHO India Country Office. It was inaugurated by Hon. Minister for
Health, Thiru N. Thalavai Sundaram, Govt. of Tamil Nadu, and was attended by
Ms. Sheela Rani Chunkath, Health Secretary, Govt. of Tamil Nadu; Thiru M.
Mutia Kalaivanan, Commissioner for MCH & Welfare; Ms. Supriya Sahu, Joint
Secretary, Health and Family Welfare Dept, Govt. of Tamil Nadu; and UNICEF
staff, and 240 State officials.
