Partnering with Media to combat Pandemic Influenza

 

 

The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare joined hands with WHO, UNICEF and the media to strategize on how to inform and protect the public from Pandemic H1N1 (2009) Influenza at the National Media Communication Workshop held in New Delhi on 23-24 July, 2009.

 

Ms Neelam Kapur, Principal Director General, Press Information Bureau; and WHO Representative to India, Dr S J Habayeb; stressed on media’s role as a key partner in effective dissemination of accurate information on Pandemic Influenza, in their opening remarks.

 

Mr Vineet Chowdhry, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, presided over the workshop which started with a presentation on “Understanding the Pandemic Influenza” by Dr. Khanchit Limparkarnjanarat, from WHO Regional Office. Dr. Shiv Lal, Special Director General (Public Health) & Director, National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD), talked about “India’s Response to the Pandemic”

 

Almost 70 participants from across the country, including national and regional media from both print and electronic, and also some state government information officers attended the two-day workshop.

 

The experts from the Government of India, WHO and UNICEF shared with the media the measures being taken and the country’s preparedness in “Surveillance and Response,” “Case Management and Infection Control,” “Drugs and Vaccines,” “Actions Beyond Health” and “Risk Communication.”

 

On the last day of the workshop, the participants visited the NICD bio-security laboratory, the outbreak cell, and the Airport Health Office for hands-on observation.
