Rapid Response teams in action

During the week under report, the following districts detected the outbreak early and initiated early containment measures:

*      Mahesana District (Gujarat): An outbreak of acute watery diarrhea was noted by rapid response team in one of the area of Mehsana city during last week of October 2002. A total of 16 cases were reported in a population of 1000. The investigation revealed the cause of outbreak as contamination of water. The control measures were initiated in the area by distribution of ORS packets, chlorine tablets and intensive IEC campaign regarding consumption of water from safe water sources.

*      Dharmapuri District (Tamil Nadu): An outbreak of fever with bodyache was notified in Selagharahalli  village, PHC Hanumanthapuram of the district during the month of August 2002. A total of 280 cases were notified during the second week of August of 2002.  The laboratory investigation carried out for typhoid and leptospirosis among 61 serum samples showed 32 posiitive for widal test by slide agglutination test and 29 to be positive for leptospirosis. The RRT declaired the outbreak as due to typhoid and leptospirosis and local authorities have been requested to supply safe drinking water.

*      East Siang District (Assam) : The rapid response team of the district notified an outbreak of malaria in East Siang and  Maryians part of the district during the month of September. The details are awaited.
