National Surveillance Programme for

Communicable Diseases

During the week under report, the following districts detected the outbreak early and initiated prompt containment measures:

1. Murshidabad district (West Bengal)

An outbreak of fever with respiratory symptoms was reported in the district during the month of May and June 2003.  The RRT of the district along with the National Institute of Communicable Diseases team investigated the episode.  A total of 719 cases and 45 deaths were reported during the period 15th May to 14th June.  Above 80% of the deaths were reported in children under 10 years of age.  The laboratory investigation carried out showed the possibility of influenza B virus infection as the cause of this episode.  The virus isolation results are awaited.

2. Dengue in Kerala State

An outbreak of Dengue fever has been reported in the state of Kerala involving mainly the district of Thiruvanantapuram, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Trichur.  A total of 442 cases and 22 deaths have been reported till 24th June 2003.  The Entomological investigation was also carried out and it showed a significant house index and Bretuae index in the affected areas.  The laboratory analysis also found 34.4% serum samples to be positive for IgM antibodies against Dengue.

3. Tehri district (Uttaranchal)

An outbreak of fever was notified in the district in the month of May 2003.  The RRT of the district along with the NICD investigated the episode.  A total of 3102 cases and 28 deaths were reported in the district during the period 30th April to 27th May 2003.  The disease had an attack rate of 19.7% and affected all the age groups with predominance in extremes of ages.  The laboratory analysis confirmed the episode as influenza type B virus infection in the district.

4. Koraput district (Orissa)

An episode of cutaneous anthrax was notified in the district.  A total of 52 cases and 1 death was reported in the district till 17th June 2003.   The laboratory analysis carried out at CMC Vellore confirmed it to be anthrax infection.
