Outbreak Report – Scrub Typhus in Sikkim

LOCATION:  Jorethang Block, South Sikkim

 

Current Situation:

As per the information received from the state nodal officer of NSPCD (National Surveillance Programme for Communicable Diseases) in Sikkim, a sudden increase in cases (1996 cases & 1 death) of febrile illness has been reported from the Jorethang block of South Sikkim district since 16.08.04. With the exception of 2 patients, all are >15 years of age and have presented with high fever, myalgia, vomiting, hypotension (in 80% cases), generalized rash (in 50% cases), and jaundice (in one patient). None them presented with hemorrhagic manifestations or altered sensorium. State rapid response team has investigated the episode. 15 peripheral smears collected from these patients were negative for malarial parasite. Entomological investigation is still being carried out.

 

Laboratory Information:

Serum, blood samples for culture and water samples for bacteriological analysis have been collected by the RRT. Preliminary investigations will be performed at the NSPCD laboratory in Gangtok. It is also planned to refer the samples to NICD, Delhi, if required.
