Outbreak Report – Scrub Typhus in Himachal Pradesh

DISEASE/ SYNDROME: Scrub Typhus

 

DISTRICT & STATE: Bilaspur, Chamba, Hamirpur, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, Sirmour, Solan, Una, Tanda

Current Situation:

As per the information updated on 03.09.2004, a total of 1798 fever cases and 2 deaths suspected due to Scrub Typhus have been reported from 11 districts of Himachal Pradesh, namely Bilaspur, Chamba, Hamirpur, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, Sirmour, Solan, Una and Tanda. So far 25 cases have been confirmed using the Wiel-Felix Test performed at the Microbiology Department of Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla. The availability of diagnostic kits at the IGMC has improved the diagnostic capability and early diagnosis & treatment of cases has reduced the mortality during this episode. The state authorities are monitoring the situation closely and have stepped up the fever surveillance in the districts. Daily reporting is being done to a designated nodal officer in the office of the DHS.

 

Similar outbreak of Scrub typhus was reported from the state last year as well albeit with higher mortality which was investigated by the National Institute of Communicable Diseases, Delhi and the Government of India team.
