Outbreak of Leptospirosis in Mumbai

Situation Report: 12 August, 2005

As per information received from State Health Department in Mumbai, 4236 cases and 26 deaths have been reported due to acute febrile illness (between 29th July and 10th August 2005) in Mumbai. 112 of these fever cases have been reported as probable Leptospirosis on the basis of Dri-Dot Elisa Test positivity. Number of fever deaths till 11th August were reported as 37 (figure for cumulative number of cases is awaited). The main symptoms among the dead were fever with pulmonary syndrome.

According to the state health department the number of cases due to Leptospirosis this year is expected to be high due to prolonged exposure to heavy rains, water logging and floods. 50 ventilators are operational in various hospitals in Mumbai and 50 more will be arranged today. Health department has set up camps in the affected area to manage the cases. Outpatients of fever are being treated with doxycycline, while those requiring admissions are being administered crystalline penicillin.

As per the laboratory information, the major serovar (>90%) is icterohemmrohaegiae with few canicola (and therefore efforts to be targeted towards rodent control).

Another district affected is adjoining Kalyan which has reported 66 fever cases admissions in the last 24 hours (updated figure for total cases since 29th is awaitrd). The total number of deaths due to acute febrile illness reported since 29th is 29 (2 from rural areas and 27 from the municipal area).
