Outbreak Report – Febrile Illness in Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh

DISEASE/ SYNDROME: Acute febrile illness

 

DISTRICT & STATE: Sitapur district, Uttar Pradesh

LOCATION:  Gurdhapa Village, Rampur Mathura Block, district Sitapur

 

Current Situation:

As per the information received from the state nodal officer of NSPCD in Uttar Pradesh and the Chief Medical Officer of Sitapur District, a total of 20 deaths have been reported in Gurdhapa village of Rampur Mathura Block during the period 1st June 2004 to 17th September 2004. The population of Gurdhapa village is approximately 850. The deaths have been reported in all the age groups (3 days to 65 years). The clinical presentation of the death cases was mainly fever and duration of illness varied from 5 hours to 2-3 days. There was no history of headache, altered sensorium, rash, diarrhoea or dysentery in these death cases. The teams from district headquarters have investigated the episode and collected 120 slides for malarial parasite. Out of these, one slide was positive for malaria (Plasmodium falciparum). The discussion with the CMO revealed that the district is endemic for malaria with an average of 5-6 deaths due to malaria being reported every year. 

As per the available information, a team from state headquarter Lucknow is visiting the affected village to investigate the episode. Technical assistance has also been offered by the National Institute of Communicable Diseases, Delhi
