Outbreak Report – Febrile Illness in Haridwar, Uttaranchal

LOCATION:  Sirchandi, Harchandpur, Jhabrera and Hastmauli villages of district Haridwar

 

Current Situation:

As per the information received from the district nodal officer of NSPCD (National Surveillance Programme for Communicable Diseases) in Haridwar, cases of febrile illness have been reported from the Sirchandi, Harchandpur, Jhabrera and Hastmauli villagesof the district. As on 18.10.2004, 8 cases and 5 deaths have been reported starting from 10.10.2004. Cases are in the age group of 3-9 years and present with mild fever, vomiting, abdominal pain and hematemesis (in 2 fatal cases). Preliminary laboratory investigation have revealed high SGOT and SGPT (in the range of 4000IU/cu. mm), reduced total leukocyte count, markedly reduced platelet count (in the range of 11,000-12,000/cu mm) and reduced blood sugar levels in all the cases and deaths. Peripheral smear for malarial parasite was found negative. Bacterial cause is being investigated by the district laboratory. Entomological investigations are underway.
