Current Situation:

 

An outbreak of acute encephalitis syndrome has occurred in Muzzafarpur district of Bihar. As per the preliminary information, between 28th May 2005 and 15th June 2005, 23 cases (14 deaths) with symptoms of acute encephalitis such as high fever, altered sensorium and convulsions were admitted in the S.K. Medical College in Muzzafarpur district. Cases were in the age group of 1 ½ to 9 years and as per preliminary information, scattered across the district. Preliminary investigations have also not shown any entomological correlation. A central team led by NICD Delhi is currently in the field to investigate the episode. Further details will be updated following the return of the central team from the field.

 

Laboratory investigations:

Samples will be collected by the central team who will then submit the for analysis at NICD Delhi
