DISEASE/ SYNDROME: Acute Jaundice Syndrome

 

DISTRICT & STATE:  Pune district, Maharashtra

LOCATION:  Alandi village under Alandi PHC in Pune district of Mahrashtra

 

Current Situation:

The state nodal officer of NSPCD in Pune has informed that as of 29.03.2005, 71 cases (no pregnant females; no deaths) of acute jaundice have occurred in Alandi village (21,772 affected population) under Alandi PHC in Pune district. The outbreak was investigated by the district Rapid Response Team. The cause of the outbreak has been identified as irregular disinfection of water, faulty chlorination and leakages in pipeline.

Isolation ward has been established in the local hospital. Pipeline repair, house to house surveillance for active case search, health education & IEC are being carried out.

The team of experts from NIV visited the affected area on 28/3/05. 7 out of 9 serum samples tested at NIV Pune have been found positive for anti-HEV IgM. 5 water samples collected have also tested positive for hepatitis E. 1 out of 12 water samples tested has shown fecal contamination. Results of 2 samples of ice and chemical analysis of 5 water samples is awaited.
