Outbreak Report – Jaundice in Baramati, Maharashtra

DISEASE/ SYNDROME: Acute Jaundice Syndrome

 

DISTRICT & STATE: Baramati City in Baramati Block of Pune district, Maharshtra

DATE OF ONSET:  22 March 2005

LOCATION:  Sathe Nagar, Siddhartha Nagar, Bhim nagar, Sriram Nagar, Panchsheel Nagar, Amrayee and Kasba areas of the Baramati City in Pune district.

 

Current Situation:

As per the information received from the state nodal officer of NSPCD in Pune, as of 29.03.2005, 306 cases (including 2 pregnant females; no deaths) of acute jaundice have occurred in the Baramati city (25,000 affected population) of Pune district since the first case occurred on 22.03.2005. Adults have been more commonly affected. Cases are still being reported. Leakage in the water pipelines is being considered as the likely cause. Potable water is being supplied through tankers. Surveillance, chlorine testing, treatment of cases, protection of ante-natal cases by giving immunoglobulin, house-to-house surveys and health education are being carried out.

 

Laboratory investigations:

5 serum samples have been collected and submitted to NIV, Pune for diagnostic testing. The results are awaited. 30 out of 35 water samples tested at State Public Health Laboratory, Pune were found to be bacteriologically unfit.
