Outbreak Report – Jaundice in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh

DISEASE/ SYNDROME: Acute Jaundice Syndrome

LOCATION:  Moinbagh, Yakudpura, Fatehshah Nagar, Rajiv Nagar, Idibazaar and 3 other adjoining urban slums in Hyderabad

 

Current Situation:

As per the information received from the state nodal officer of IDSP in Hyderabad, as of 29.03.2005, 121 (including 4 pregnant females) cases (no deaths) of acute jaundice have occurred in the urban slums of  Hyderabad (108 cases in Moinbagh, Yakudpura, Fatehshah Nagar, Rajiv Nagar, Idibazaar and 3 other adjoining slums alone). The cases were first reported to the authorities on 19.03.2005 who then investigated the episode on the same day. Fault in the piped water supply is being considered as the likely cause. The water board is taking corrective measures and people are being supplied potable water trough tankers. IEC campaign has been intensified.

 

Laboratory investigations:

A total of 88 serum samples, 4 water samples for bacteriological analysis and 2 water samples for chemical analysis have been collected. 74 serum samples have been found positive for IgM to HEV and 5 for HAV. While the results of microbiological & chemical analysis of water are awaited, residual chlorine was found to be absent in most of the water samples.
