Outbreak Report – Cases of Acute diarrheal disease in Suglu town, Manipur

DISTRICT & STATE: Suglu town, Thoubal district, Manipur

LOCATION: Suglu town (part of Thoubal district) on the border of Thoubal, Csandel and Churachandpur districts, Manipur

 

Current Situation:

As per information received from the state nodal officer of NSPCD in Manipur, 57 cases (36 males and 21 females) of acute diarrheal disease (ADD) have been admitted to Suglu town hospital in Thoubal district of Manipur between 1st to 31st May 2005. Most of these cases are from the bordering Csandel and Churachandpur districts. 3 child deaths in the area have occurred due to clinically suspected malaria believed to be imported cases. No deaths have occurred due to ADD. The district health authorities have investigated the episode & water consumption from contaminated natural sources like ponds and streams (also used by cattle) has been found as the likely cause.

District authorities have undertaken control measures such as setting up a medical camp, distribution of chlorine tablets, ORS and IEC activities.

 

Laboratory Information:

Stool samples have been tested at the district hospital laboratory and preliminary findings indicate presence of Escherichia coli (Serotyping not done). Water samples have been collected for bacteriological analysis by the public health engineering department. Results are awaited.
