Outbreak Report – Cholera in Kashmir

LOCATION: Hyderpura, Chanpura, Tangpura, Barzulla & Pirbagh areas of Badgam district

 

Current Situation:

Further update has been received from the Director of Health Services, Kashmir Division. As per the information, 372 cases (0 deaths) of acute diarrheal disease have been reported from the Hyderpura, Chanpura, Tangpura, Barzulla & Pirbagh areas of Badgam district of Kashmir Division between 20 to 24 August 2004. Of the 40 stool samples cultures at the Shere-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences in Srinagar, 10 have tested positive for Vibrio cholerae O1 el Tor Inaba. 4 out of 8 water samples collected from the area were found unfit for human consumption. The cause of the episode has been linked to sewage contamination of the drinking water supply. The officials from the Directorate have investigated the episode and taken appropriate control measures including IEC activity. The situation is under control now.
