Outbreak Report – Jaundice in Baramati, Maharashtra

DISEASE/ SYNDROME: Cholera

 

DISTRICT & STATE: Sangli district, Maharshtra

DATE OF ONSET:  18 March 2005

LOCATION:  Municipal wards 2, 3, 9, 13, 19, 24 of Sangli Miraj Kupwad Municipal Corporation, Sangli district.

 

Current Situation:

As per the information of state nodal officer of NSPCD in Pune, 363 cases of acute diarrheal disease (and 1 death on 21.03.2005) have occurred in the Municipal wards 2, 3, 9, 13, 19 (most affected ward) and 24 of Sangli Miraj Kupwad Municipal Corporation (1,18,708 affected population), Sangli district. Cases are still being reported. Multiple leakages in the water pipelines are being considered as the likely cause. Potable water is being supplied through tankers. Surveillance, chlorine testing, management of cases, house-to-house surveys and health education are being carried out.

 

Laboratory investigations:

31 out of 133 stool samples cultured at Sangli Medical College and district public health laboratory for enteropathogens from these cases of acute diarrheal disease have grown Vibrio cholerae O1 ogawa. 2 out of a total of 198 water samples tested at the district public health laboratory have shown fecal contamination whereas residual chlorine was absent in 153 out of 3043 water samples tested by OT test.
