Location:  Kunduli PHC in Koraput district

 

Current Situation:

As per the information received from the state nodal officer of NSPCD, 24 cases (& 1 death of a 55 year female with symptoms of acute GE following ingestion of infected meat) of cutaneous anthrax have occurred in Chargaon and Sukiaguda villages (total population 935) under Kunduli PHC of Koraput district in Orissa since 02.06.2005 following handling of carcasses of cattle. 40 animals have also died in the area.

All the cases have been treated. District authorities have carried out IEC activities and vaccination of the cattle in the area and are monitoring the situation. The episode has been investigated by a central team headed by NICD Delhi who confirmed the cases as clinically cutaneous anthrax.

 

Laboratory investigations:

10 samples from cutaneous ulcers have been collected by the central team and will be submitted to NICD laboratory on 21.06.2005 for analysis.
