Avian Influenza

 

WHO-India Applauds U.S. Support and Partnership in Avian Influenza Control and Pandemic Preparedness

Mr Geoffrey R. Pyatt, Charge’ d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy and Dr S. J. Habayeb, WHO Representative to India, signing the grant agreement.

In addition to the ongoing and extensive technical and financial US support to WHO-India for Avian Influenza epidemic preparedness and other health priorities, the US is also co-sponsoring the Ministerial Conference on Avian Influenza Control and Pandemic Preparedness in Asia, 27-28 July 2006, New Delhi.  The Government of India and WHO, in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization, are hosting this conference which will be held in New Delhi on 27-28 July 2006.

On this occasion, Mr Geoffrey R. Pyatt, Charge d’ Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi, signed the grant agreement with Dr S. J. Habayeb, WHO Representative to India, in the presence of Dr Robert Clay, Director, Office of Population, Health and Nutrition, USAID and other officials.  Mr Pyatt noted that Avian Influenza is a joint priority for both the USA and WHO.  This is a grave global threat and it is essential for countries to be well prepared in various sectors.

Dr S. J. Habayeb, WHO Representative to India, expressed his high appreciation of the strength, depth and quality of the partnership between WHO-India and the US, notably in health strategy coordination, technical collaboration and funding. He commended the vision of US colleagues in health sector development. He noted that the support of the US Government, USAID, and CDC is outstanding, and that the US support maximizes the potential for successful outcomes to serve health development efforts in India.
