Investing
in strategic information to guide a more effective response
WHO and the GOI has had a
long history in strategic information collaboration since the 1990s. In
partnership with UNAIDS, WHO extends technical assistance to GOI in
establishing and expansion of the sentinel surveillance system including
development of methodologies for estimations of the HIV infection burden.
Since 2003, this has been institutionalized with the support of WHO through the network of the National Institute of
Health and Family Welfare and the Indian Council of Medical Research. The National Institute of Health and Family Welfare
(NIHFW) monitors the quality and coverage of surveillance through
regional coordination teams, comprising of senior epidemiologists, microbiologists
and STI specialists. NIHFW undertakes validation of the data and analysis of
HIV prevalence trends with support of WHO.
The Institute for research in Medical Statistics, an affiliate of the Indian
Council of Medical Research (ICMR), undertakes the estimations of HIV
infection burden. The process of estimations is monitored by an expert
committee and comprises of senior epidemiologists, biostatisticians and
researches in the field of HIV. The estimation process and monitoring is
supported by WHO.
