Maximizing the health sector’s contribution to HIV prevention

*      Prevention of sexual transmission of HIV: condom programming, prevention of STI, upscaling outreach to populations at highest risk (including sex workers, men who have sex with men, young people, drug users); and integrating HIV/AIDS into sexual and reproductive health services.

*      Prevention for people living with HIV/AIDS (positive prevention)

*      Prevention of HIV transmission through injecting drug use (harm reduction)

*      Prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PPTCT)

*      Prevention of HIV in the health care setting: blood safety, safe injections, universal precautions, universal access to post-exposure prophylaxis

Linking prevention activities to treatment and care interventions is crucial for a comprehensive approach to combating HIV/AIDS.

The work of WHO includes providing technical support for the following:

*     Development of National guidelines for STI treatment using the syndromic approach

*     Development of national guidelines for post-exposure prophylaxis

*     Development of the national training curriculum on PPTCT

*     Development of guidelines and policies  on blood safety

*     Promotion of voluntary non-renumerated donor recruitment and appropriate clinical use of blood
