HIV-AIDS

 

History of WHO support to HIV/AIDS in India

WHO has been working closely with the Ministry of Health in HIV since the 1980s. The set-up and expansion of sero-surveillance centers for tracking HIV was supported by WHO in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research, before the detection of the first case in 1986.

1987

Launch of the National AIDS Control Programme (NACP) with WHO’s technical support in the formulation of strategy and plan for implementation of prevention and control activities.

1989

Development of the medium term plan for HIV/AIDS control in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Manipur and Delhi, with a US $10 million budget mobilized from various sources, with technical support from WHO

1990-91

Launch of the unlinked anonymous surveillance to track the HIV epidemic, supported by WHO

1992

Following the launch of the National AIDS Project-I (NACP-I), WHO assisted in the planning and implementation of a spectrum of activities such as education and awareness programme, blood safety, hospital infection control, condom promotion, strengthening of clinical services for both STI and HIV. WHO supported development of guidelines for various activities and procured the necessary equipment for effective blood measures.

1996

Increasing technical support for surveillance, estimations and projections; prevention activities such as STI and HIV, blood safety, monitoring and evaluation, operational research together with the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and other UN partners

2003 Dec

Launch of the care and treatment programme by Government of India with technical support from WHO.

2004 - present

Scaling up of the national prevention, treatment, care and support programme with technical assistance from WHO in various programmatic areas.
