On the occasion of the
World TB Day, WHO congratulates the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare,
Government of India, for the remarkable success of India's Revised National
Tuberculosis Control Programme
(RNTCP). Using the
WHO-recommended DOTS strategy approximately 1.2 million patients were
initiated on treatment in 2004. Since it's inception the RNTCP has treated over 4 million
patients, saving an additional 0.7 million lives. In the areas covered
by RNTCP (87% of the population) the case detection and treatment success in
2004 has exceeded the global targets of 70% and 85% respectively. With
the current rate of expansion, nationwide coverage is expected in a few
months.
