Curtain-raisers

World Health Day (WHD) is observed on 7 April every year to commemorate the founding of the World Health Organization.  WHD presents an opportunity for drawing worldwide attention to a subject of major importance to global health.

This year WHD -2008 celebrations coincide with the 60th anniversary of the WHO.  Keeping in view the overwhelming evidence, that climate change presents growing threats to international public health security, the theme for WHD-2008 is “Protecting health from climate change”.  WHO is collaborating with the Health Fitness Trust, New Delhi to organize a month-long campaign on "Protecting Health from climate change".  The curtain-raiser event - initiated on 5th March, 2008 - was organized to raise awareness and understanding on the interdependence of health and climate change with a focus on government, civil society, international organizations and especially young people.

"Protecting health from Climate Change".

In the Declamation contest at Deshbandhu College on Global Warming and “Protecting health from Climate Change”, college-going youngsters emphasized simple means to conserve energy.  In his inaugural address the World Health Representative to India, Dr. Salim J.Habayeb, encouraged young people to get involved in protecting health from the negative impacts of climate change. He also emphasized that the message needs to be spread amongst all since climate change is everybody’s business!

To mark the WHD-2008, other events planned at different venues across Delhi, include an inter-school Poster competition, a free health checkup/counseling camp and Expo for the community. A mass awareness campaign will be organized at the Secretariat ground, Chanakyapuri, a Health Run, thematic shows, and demonstrations as well as senior citizens’ walk and tree plantation drives will be organized to commemorate WHD-2008.  Police and Defence services, youth groups, colleges, schools, NGOs, Resident Welfare Societies, Scouts and Guides, NCC and Red Cross are expected to participate in these events.
