This year WHD -2008
celebrations coincide with the 60th anniversary of the
WHO. Keeping in view the overwhelming evidence, that climate change
presents growing threats to international public health security, the theme
for WHD-2008 is “Protecting health from climate change”. WHO
is collaborating with the Health Fitness Trust, New Delhi to organize a month-long
campaign on "Protecting Health from climate change". The curtain-raiser event - initiated on 5th
March, 2008 - was organized to raise awareness and understanding on
the interdependence of health and climate change with a focus on
government, civil society, international organizations and especially young
people.

youngsters emphasized simple means to conserve energy. In his inaugural address the World Health
Representative to India,
Dr. Salim J.Habayeb,
encouraged young people to get involved in protecting health from the
negative impacts of climate change. He also emphasized that the message
needs to be spread amongst all since climate change is everybody’s
business!
To mark the WHD-2008, other events
planned at different venues across Delhi,
include an inter-school Poster competition, a free health
checkup/counseling camp and Expo for the community. A mass awareness
campaign will be organized at the Secretariat ground, Chanakyapuri,
a Health Run, thematic shows, and demonstrations as well as senior
citizens’ walk and tree plantation drives will be organized to commemorate
WHD-2008. Police and Defence services,
youth groups, colleges, schools, NGOs, Resident Welfare Societies, Scouts
and Guides, NCC and Red Cross are expected to participate in these events.
