World Mental Health Day 2006
The
10th of October is observed as the World Mental Health Day. The
theme for this year was “Building awareness – reducing risk: mental illness
and suicide”. A celebrity cricket match was organized by the NGO, Manas, under the GOI-WHO Biennium Collaborative Programme. Manas and the Institute of Human Behaviour
and Allied sciences have also organized a week long programme
for raising awareness through exhibitions and public camps from 7th
to 13th of October 2006.
Ranji Trophy team players from Delhi and nearby states were invited to
play a cricket match with the celebrities. The audience included school
children, children from special schools, and other NGOs.
Dr
Paramita Sudharto, Public Health Administrator, WHO Country Office for India,
inaugurated the match. Items prepared by differently abled
people were put up in stalls for display and sale, and generated a lot of
public interest. A media workshop was held on the 4th of December
to sensitize the media on mental health issues and reporting.
