Health Care for the Elderly

Development of models for Community based health care for the elderly

The elderly are vulnerable on several fronts, due to high prevalence of chronic diseases in this age group, their weak financial status, and lack of mobility to access health care, and therefore require special focus. The elderly also prefer to be cared for and receive care in their own homes.

Projects have been conducted in Chennai, Jodhpur, Mizoram, Raipur, Varanasi, Chandigarh, and Pondicherry to evolve feasible and sustainable low-cost models for health care of the elderly.

The approaches are similar, utilizing workers in the community engaged in other health-related or social service activity, with nominal remuneration, or community volunteers given token incentives. These field level functionaries provide basic practical information to elderly and their carers, and link to the existing primary health care system.
