Involvement of
Civil Society in Tobacco Control
WHO is committed to capacity
building of NGOs at the grassroots level to support the tobacco control programme.
The activities range from developing school intervention programmes,
community education in slum and tribal areas, organizing events and workshops
etc. A novel scheme was implemented among NGOs to develop innovative
strategies for tobacco control. As a result of this active advocacy, NGOs are
gradually positioning themselves as catalysts and using strong advocacy for
changing social attitudes towards use of tobacco.
Public awareness campaigns by BAJJS
on tobacco control among the tribal
groups
Many civil society organizations have taken up tobacco
education in their constituencies. These civil society groups are providing
school based and community interventions on tobacco control. The Voluntary
Health Association of India (VHAI) held training workshops for their State
Voluntary Associations to integrate Tobacco Control into their activities at
state level.
